If there are too many complexities, the process automation becomes difficult to debug, and it’s probable that more points of failure will start to appear, Mary Shacklett notes. Writing for techrepublic.com, she says that simple data handoffs work better, so businesses shouldn’t try to do too much at once.

Before funding automation tech, it’s important to show the executive who will be signing it off what exactly it’s going to deliver. The executive expects to see a return on investment to the business, so it’s vital to build up a good business case. Moreover, during the process design stage, you need to consider what, if any, human touchpoints will be included in the automation.

“Will there be times when a manual override is necessitated? What if humans decide they want to intervene? Are there sufficient ‘interrupt’ points in the automation to facilitate this?” Ms Shacklett asks.

She goes on to note that businesses also need to consider what conditions will trigger alerts to be issued. It’s also important to know who will receive these alerts and what actions will need to be taken in each situation.
