Using process automation to its full capacity is still proving to be a major challenge for many IT organisations, it has been claimed.

In a recent survey of more than 1,100 companies across the globe, the IDC (International Data Corporation) found that more than two thirds (70 per cent) haven’t yet learnt how to effectively utilise automation and self-service tools.

The poll focused specifically on usage of cloud technologies among the IT firms questioned, and also highlighted a significant skills shortage in the industry. The results show that almost half (44 per cent) of the organisations involved have been unable to find appropriately skilled staff to support major cloud implementation projects.

According to Carla Arend, a director of the IDC’s Cloud Practice, businesses must put the work in to get the most from the opportunities available.

She told techradar.com how the use of cloud computing as an “increasingly business-critical technology” is quickly changing how IT assets are evaluated, procured and deployed.

“However, the effective use of automation, self-service, and orchestration tools remains the biggest challenge for IT organizations, while accurately defining costs and implementing chargeback models is a struggle in the business and IT relationship,” Arend added.

“The transition to cloud computing requires change throughout the organization – in people, process, and technology.”

Supplier relationships are also proving problematic for many firms, misco.co.uk reports. Of those questioned, 61 per cent said they had struggled to up-skill workers to be able to evaluate and negotiate with service providers.
